The data revealed by the United Nations show the profound gender inequality that currently exists. Globally, women earn only 77 cents for every dollar that men earn by doing the same job. One in 5 women have experienced physical and / or sexual violence. Women represent only 13 percent of landowners. Around the world, almost 750 million women and girls alive today got married before they turned 18.

Los datos revelados por las Naciones Unidas evidencian la profunda desigualdad de género que existe actualmente. A nivel mundial, las mujeres ganan solo 77 centavos por cada dólar que ganan los hombres haciendo el mismo trabajo. Una de cada 5 mujeres han experimentado violencia física y/o sexual. Las mujeres representan solo el 13 por ciento de los propietarios de las tierras. En todo el mundo, casi 750 millones de mujeres y niñas vivas hoy se casaron antes de cumplir 18 años.

This problem represents the greatest challenge for Guatemalan society, since a comprehensive and constant intervention is needed to change the mentality of men and women. At EDUSI, we focus on providing workshops and trainings, twice a week, to address the following topics:

• Human Rights and Women’s Self-Esteem: educational talks are given regarding Universal Human Rights, as well as the specific Women’s Rights. They are taught techniques to develop and strengthen their self-esteem so they can recognize the importance of the female role within families, communities and society in general.
• Literacy: currently 85% of women attending EDUSI cannot read or write. We know that this aspect is fundamental for them to know and fight for their rights and have the opportunity of equanimous development; hence, we also carry out literacy activities for adult women.
• Crafts and Self-sufficiency: we have technical workshops aimed at the self-sufficient development of women. They are taught to make products for trade such as pastries and desserts, ornaments, cleaning products, aesthetic products, embroidery and clothing, etc. The idea is to provide them with the tools for their self-sustain.
• Leadership and Micro-company: through talks and training, women are encouraged to start their own business by selling the products they learned to make. The goal is to ensure that they generate an economic income that allows them to sustain their home and grant them financial independence. We want women to lead and drive the socio-economic growth of our communities.

Este problema representa el mayor desafío para la sociedad guatemalteca en general, ya que se necesita una intervención integral y constante para lograr cambiar la mentalidad de hombres y mujeres. En EDUSI, nos enfocamos en brindar talleres y capacitaciones, 2 veces por semana, que aborden los siguientes temas:

• Derechos Humanos y Autoestima de la Mujer: se imparten charlas educativas sobre los derechos universales de todo ser humano, así como sobre los derechos específicos de la mujer. Se les enseña técnicas para desarrollar y fortalecer su autoestima de manera que reconozcan la importancia del rol femenino dentro de las familias, comunidades y sociedad en general.
• Alfabetización: actualmente el 85% de las mujeres que asisten a EDUSI no saben leer ni escribir. Sabemos que este aspecto es fundamental para que ellas puedan conocer y pelear por sus derechos y tener la oportunidad de un desarrollo ecuánime; por lo que también realizamos actividades de alfabetización para mujeres adultas.
• Manualidades y Autosuficiencia: contamos con talleres técnicos orientados al desarrollo autosuficiente de las mujeres. Se les enseña a realizar productos para el comercio tales como repostería, adornos, productos de limpieza, talleres de estética, bordado y confección, etc.
• Liderazgo y Microempresa: a través de charlas y capacitaciones se motivan a las mujeres a que inicien su propio negocio de venta de productos o servicios. El objetivo es lograr que ellas generen un ingreso económico que les permita sostener su hogar y les otorgue una independencia financiera. Queremos que sean las mujeres las que lideren e impulsen el crecimiento socio-económico de nuestras comunidades.
